A blessed Feast of All Saints to my gentle readers! To celebrate in remembrance of all who have attained the beatific vision and have entered the Kingdom, I present you with ‘Battalions of Steel’ from Saxon! Okay, yeah, I admit, the lyrics are cheesy in the brotherhood-of-heroes-for-metal-honour-and-glory way that only power metal can possibly be, but the musicianship is awesome. If the Son doesn’t throw up the horns as the Church Triumphant rides out with this song, or one like it, blaring from the Marshalls on the towers of Heaven when he returns in glory, this faithful metalhead will be seriously bummed.
Power metal is great because it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously and is generally upbeat. I was going to post a Helloween video on October 31 but did not find the time.
ReplyDeleteOn the topic of Christ and metal, are you familiar with the doom metal band Trouble? They were out of Chicago (my hometown) and they integrated Christianity into their lyrics, which they mixed with a sound reminiscent of early Black Sabbath.
Hi John!
ReplyDeleteThat would have been awesome - what was the Helloween video, by the way? (I have to confess, I've been a better fan of Helloween's spin-offs and side projects, particularly Gamma Ray and Masterplan, than of Helloween itself, though Walls of Jericho is a work of genius...)
I haven't heard of Trouble, actually. Thanks for the recommendation, though, I'll be sure to check them out!
All the best,
Matt
Hi Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI was going to post of video of the song "Halloween." I thought it might be sort of fun to post on Halloween night but I got caught up with some work and forgot to post the video!
Here is a link to the video on YouTube if you are interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOAl0enE7kI
I am digging the guy with the Jack O'Lantern for a head!
